Laser Plumbing Te Puke wins Best Medium Sized stand at Tauranga Home show

Last weekend, record numbers of people visited the Tauranga Home Show. The organisers, who have been calling it the “$10 million weekend” were happy with the 10 per cent increase in visitor numbers, according to organiser Graeme Martin.

Laser Plumbing Te Puke was very successful, and won the “Best Medium Sized Stand”. Maria Lockwood, from Laser Plumbing Te Puke, said “A lot of people were talking about the more contemporary looks for their wood fires, there was a lot of interest in our gas fires and we also had a Bosch 26E Hot water unit and the new Escea DX1500 gas fire on the stand which kept the reps very busy talking to customers and showing them the products.

Laser Plumbing Te Puke, managed to receive a lot of leads from the show. They had a booking sheet available which meant  customers could book in their jobs on the spot. Many people took advantage of this service and in the upcoming weeks Laser Plumbing Te Puke be will be busy installing products and providing local residents with the “Totally Dependable Laser Service”.

Laser Electrical Albany – New Owner Graeme Sorenson

We are pleased to welcome Graeme Sorenson, the latest Member to join the Laser Group. Graeme recently purchased Albany Electrical Services Ltd, which will now be trading as Laser Electrical Albany.

Graeme is no stranger to the “Laser way of life”, he has been a team member of Laser Electrical Rosebank for  the past 14 years, and in this time, had a huge amount of experience within the electrical industry and managing electricians.  After years of working within the Laser Group, Graeme realises the huge potential and value there is in belonging to the Laser Group.

At Laser Electrical Albany, Graeme begins with an existing team and a strong customer base, which we know will provide him with a great launching pad for future growth in one of New Zealand’s fastest growing areas. Laser Electrical Albany currently specialise in commercial maintenance and the medium to high end residential market.

New Premises in Taupo

Although Laser Plumbing Taupo and Laser Electrical Taupo are individually owned and operated, they recently decided to open brand new showrooms side by side to increase business referrals and intensify the Laser Brand. Last week they celebrated their grand opening and Daniel Wilson (National Sales & Marketing Manager for Laser Group) attended the event. He commented on the huge amount of planning and work that had gone into the showrooms and the opening event. He was particularly excited to see two separate Laser members unite, to further promote the Laser Brand and its ‘totally dependable’ plumbing and electrical services. Congratulations to Dave, Kylie, Chris, Catherine, Mark & Cherie on working together to strengthen the Laser brand. We wish you well for your joint venture together as well as your own separate journeys.

Brent & Megan Christie from Laser Plumbing and Electrical Ashburton, recently opted to invest and purchase some shares in the Laser Porsche. Last Wednesday night, they were delighted when Steve Richards made a lightning stop in Ashburton, during a break in his preparations, before racing at Ruapuna Park in Christchurch. The Melbourne-based driver happily signed autographs and posed for pictures with staff and clients.

As investors in the Porsche, Brent and Megan are now able to utilise a trip to Australia to watch the Carrera Cup series and experience the thrill of hot laps in the Laser Porsche. After careful consideration they have decided to offer the prize to a few of their team members, (even throwing in a wild card option). They hope this will increase team unity, create some healthy competition and help maintain employee retention, something Brent believes is key to moving forward.

Every week Laser Plumbing and Electrical Ashburton have a team meeting and highlight the team members who have provided a ‘totally dependable’ service. Whether they worked late to ensure a job was completed, provided exceptional customer service, or went above and beyond to solve a problem, each member gets recognised. Once all the nominations are received, each nominee will  fill in an application form and explain why they are most deserving of the prize.

With the rain on its way be sure to check that your downpipes and spouting aren’t blocked. Ideally these should be cleaned out at least once a year but ideally late autumn and late spring. Blocked spouting can cause water to come into the house. The backup of water from the blockage usually overflows into eaves and ceiling space causing a lot of damage to both inside and outside your home.

Likewise debris left to rot in gutters and downpipes can cause corrosion which can be expensive to repair or replace. Future proof this problem by having a leafguard fitted to the gutters to stop debris from settling.

Laser Electrical Rosebank has won over 60 other Laser Electrical Businesses to be named Laser Electrical NZ Business of the Year 2011 at the annual International Laser conference held in Darwin Australia.

With over 350 delegates attending from Laser businesses both from Australia and New Zealand and a trade expo consisting of more than 30 suppliers this was once again a large event and stiff competition. Laser Electrical Rosebank also scooped up the Gold Award for Excellence in Systems -Electrical, and Bronze Award for Outstanding Growth – Electrical. 

The top award recognises not only their ability to grow their business remarkably in a tough market but also for their strong support of the Laser Systems and their ability to use them fully to their advantage to drive efficiencies and promote growth. As a team they have earned the respect of fellow Laser members which proves them to be a great ambassador for the Group and for other members to aspire to.

Laser Electrical Rosebank is the founding business upon which the Laser Franchise was built upon. Based in Avondale, on Rosebank Road it was established in 1982 by two enterprising young electricians, David Clemmett and Peter Bassett and has grown to become one of Auckland’s largest electrical contracting companies currently with a staff of 45. Being the original success story of Laser, they continue to set the benchmark for the rest of the Laser businesses.

While the company has won a string of awards in previous years, winning the top award this year was especially bitter sweet. The past year has been particularly tough not only with the tough economic climate but with the tragic death of founder and director Peter Bassett. This pivotal time within the company highlighted the strong team they have built and their ability to carry on is a testament to the processes and systems Peter had put in place. “Winning the award is a testament to our staff who are continually hard working and committed. They make a huge effort all year round to make sure our customers’ needs are met and exceeded and this award is for them.” Michael Clemmett General Manager.

Michael attributes their success to a lot of hard work and solidifying the strong systems already in place. Even in the difficult market Laser Electrical Rosebank have continued to grow, working harder at selling to bring on more customers while still ensuring they manage their existing customers well. Being primarily a new home residentially motivated business, they have a reputation for their quality work in this market with well-known clients including Fletcher Residential, Signature Homes and Jennian Homes. However Laser Electrical Rosebank have been growing their service and maintenance division with 5 service men dedicated to both commercial, light industrial and domestic installation and repair works. They service the local business community as well as a client base throughout Auckland.

Aiming to raise the standards within the trades industry which is particularly notorious for being unreliable, they are focussing on always delivering a professional service to their clients and striving to be Totally Dependable. With the high standards they have set, there is no doubt Laser Electrical Rosebank will continue “Taking it to the Top”.

In 2010 a new award was established in honour of founder Peter Bassett. The Peter Bassett Laser International Business of the Year Award is the top accolade in recognition of the best Laser business across both trades, electrical and plumbing, and Trans-Tasman.

The 2011 annual Laser conference was held in Darwin, Australia and with 178 Laser businesses throughout New Zealand and Australia vying for the award, competition was stiff. This year Laser Plumbing East Tamaki took out the top award, also scooping up the Silver Award for Outstanding Growth, Silver Award for Systems and the Laser Plumbing NZ Business of the Year Award.

General Manager of Laser Group New Zealand Scott Carr sums it up “Over the last 12 months Marc and Roger have shown an attitude to their business that really epitomises what the Peter Bassett International award is all about. In a pretty tough market they have continued to grow their profits remarkably. Their business is one that many other Laser members aspire to emulate”. The sense of reward was special not only for owners Marc and Roger but for their whole team. And it also had sentimental meaning as a tribute to Pete and his family. “It was a fantastic feeling, it is recognition of a lot of years of hard work” says Roger of winning the award.

Laser Plumbing East Tamaki is an amalgamation of two of Auckland’s most successful plumbing businesses. Owners Marc Firman and Roger Westbrooke joined forces to better leverage their complementary skills to form PlumbGas Systems Ltd, joining Laser Group in April 2007 to become Laser Plumbing East Tamaki. Both Marc and Roger have over 25 years’ experience each in the plumbing industry and have worked hard to get to where they are today part of which has included putting strong processes in place to improve efficiencies in operation. They have fully embraced the Laser Systems and have recently rolled out the use of PDAs.

The last 12-24 months have been particularly tough with some of their key new housing customers stopping trading but rather than following suit, this prompted their residentially motivated business to diversify.  They now also offer service and maintenance, light commercial, schools, restaurants and bars as well as new homes and alterations.

Employing a business coach assisted them to make changes within their business in order to improve it.  There has also been a focus on human resources to ensure a quality team to move them forward and this now includes a full time Estimator and highly experienced Office Administrator.  They moved into bigger premises about 2 years ago which is more accessible and provides a much larger profile, being able to be clearly seen from a busy main arterial route of Cryers Road in East Tamaki, Auckland.

The key to their growth and success during tough times lies in making sure the solution to their customer’s problem is found and showing you can do the lot (a one stop shop). Even though they now have to work harder at proactively sourcing new work and up-selling on every job, they have a different philosophy than when they first started out- placing more emphasis and priority on their major clients. Their success also relies on the quality of their team around them so Marc and Roger have put a lot of time and effort into developing and supporting their team by holding regular meetings and social events.

With plans in the future to continue to grow their business including more staff and more quality customers there is no doubt they will continue taking it to the top.
